Debunking The Myths: Myth #1 – “Webcam Sex Chatting Is Modeling”

It should come as no surprise that there are so many people in Romania and all over the world who aren’t aware that what they refer to as “webcam chatting,” or more commonly, “webcam modeling,” is actually a deceptive and modern form of human trafficking and sexual exploitation. That’s a major aspect of the important mission driving the 9 Months In Romania project forward, teaching the facts. Over the course of this series, Debunking The Myths, we will present you with some of the most common myths surrounding this human rights atrocity and then debunk them by providing you with the facts. So, please, come along with us on this journey toward the truth!

Deceptively Playing Word Games

The first of these common myths that we will debunk boils down to nothing more than deceptive word games. Of course, we are referring to the claim that webcam sex chatting is simply a type of modeling. Really? Do you really believe that? What is actually being modeled? Considering the activities taking place, webcam sex chatting is actually more appropriately categorized as pornography, or even digital prostitution. After all, an individual is paying a per-minute fee to engage in sexual activity on camera with the so-called “model” for the purpose of achieving sexual pleasure. Don’t take our word for it, though, let’s permit Merriam-Webster, an authority in the definition of words, to tell us what prostitution is…

This definition seems to perfectly support our conclusion that webcam sex chatting is actually a form of digital prostitution. Yes, we do add the term “digital” to it, because though there are sexual relations, they are in a digital format, since the “models” are engaging with their clients via webcam. What about our referring to webcam sex chatting as being ‘pornography?’ Surely, we cannot adequately demonstrate that this is true, since pornography involves two or more individuals engaging in sexual relations, which is recorded as a video production and then made available for public viewing, either free of charge or for a fee. Right? Again, we encourage you to double-check what we’ve said. And again, we can turn to an actual authority on what words mean, the Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary…

So, understanding that pornography involves “the depiction of erotic behavior intended to cause sexual excitement,” are we justified in also categorizing webcam sex chatting as pornography? Merriam-Webster seems to agree.

Why Does Any Of This Matter?

It is normal for a person to ask the question “why does any of this matter,” after learning that what they thought they knew about something, they didn’t actually know. Call it something of a defense mechanism, most people do not like to be proven wrong or taken as a fool. The immediate response to this occurrence is, usually, to make it clear that the truth, in that particular instance, is of no great importance to them, that they “don’t care.” Some people will drag this out for as long as necessary, in order to cover up the fact that they feel utterly stupid. There is no reason to feel stupid here, though, because there are some real conniving and evil people behind the webcam sex chatting industry, who’ve got a lot of practice in deceiving others.

Yes, the terrible people running the studios and operating the webcam sex websites have taken extra care to present their human rights atrocity as something more seemingly innocent, because, for one thing, their greed will lead them to say anything they need to in order to legitimize the immoral, unethical, and illegal activities they engage in to generate income. What’s more, they’ve seemingly found a way to skate around the laws regarding human trafficking and sexual exploitation, but these deceptive practices can only continue for as long as people remain ignorant to the truth. That is why it is important to understand what webcam sex chatting is and what it is not, and it is certainly not modeling at all. And with that understanding, let’s all stop referring to it as modeling, and let’s make certain that we properly edcuate others who are foolishly referring to it as modeling.

Up Next…

Stay tuned for the next installment of Debunking The Myths, when we’ll consider the claim that webcam sex chatting isn’t human trafficking if the performer is of legal age and voluntarily consents to participating in it. Thank you for indulging us with your time and attention, and we’ll see you next time!
